Specialist Neglect Workshop by Emeritus Professor Jan Howarth

Thursday 24th January

09:30-12:30 or 13:15-16:15

in Leeds City Centre

This workshop is targeted at front line practitioners and managers from agencies in contact with children and their families in Leeds. During the workshop participants can expect presentations, a case study and group discussion.

Participants will have an opportunity to explore:

  • The nature of neglect and the challenge in assessing cumulative harm
  • Establishing strengths and issues, drawing on the daily lived experience of family members
  • Assessing and meeting the individual needs of members of sibling groups
  • Securing meaningful change to achieve child centred outcomes
  • Measuring success

A practical approach will be taken that recognises the pressures practitioners and their managers are experiencing within the current working context. With this in mind appropriate practice tools and approaches will be considered.

The workshop will be delivered by Emeritus Professor Jan Horwath, author of both ‘The Neglected Child: Identification and Assessment’ and ‘Planning and Intervention in Cases of Child Neglect’. Her latest publication, co-edited with Dendy Platt, The Child’s World: The Essential Guide to Assessing Vulnerable Children and their Families  is hot off the press. Her research and writings on child welfare, particularly child neglect and assessment practice, has informed policy and practice developments both nationally and internationally.

There is no cost to attend this workshop, however delegates will be charged for non-attendance. If you need to cancel your place you must do so by emailing LSCP.Bookings@leeds.gov.uk two working days prior of a session taking place to avoid incurring a non-attendance charge.
