This session offers a very brief introduction to the topic of Stress in Infants implications for development and outcomes

This briefing aims to consider the impact of stress on the infant’s developing brain and the importance of positive early caregiving relationships for optimal social and emotional development. The Infant Mental Health Service is a targeted and specialist service working city-wide in Leeds providing direct work with infants and their caregiver from pregnancy until the child’s second birthday in addition to consultation and training. We offer a further full day’s training called “Infant Mental Health: Babies, Brains and Bonding (BBB)” - for further information contact training.imh@nhs.net.

The one-hour session will cover:

  • To consider early brain development in the context of stress and trauma in pregnancy and early caregiving experiences
  • To consider the implications  of the early experience on infant presentations at birth and beyond – including family contact
  • To make links to the long term implications for infants who experience significant stress

Briefings are not equivalent to training and are available to raise awareness on a topic.
