Introduction to Safeguarding
Online introductory training for people who are in regular contact with children and young people either directly, through work with their families / carers or through the setting in which they work.
This is seen as a minimum requirement for all people working within settings which work with or have regular contact with children and young people.
It is recommended that people undertake Safeguarding Children & Young People Refresher Training every 3 years following completion of this training.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the course participants will have an awareness of:
- An awareness of the signs and indicators that a child is experiencing abuse, neglect or exploitation
- An awareness of the impact abuse can have on a child's development
- An understanding of the importance of being professionally curious and responding to concerns about a child
- The skills to recognise and respond to safeguarding concerns in an appropriate way
- An understanding of the importance of working alongside others, including family members and other professionals to respond to safeguarding concerns.
- A basic understanding of local and national guidelines, policy and procedure relating to safeguarding children

Introduction to Child Exploitation
This online multi-agency course is for anyone working with children or young people who may be at risk of child exploitation. This course provides an overview of child exploitation in its various forms including county lines and sexual exploitation. The course helps practitioners to understand how to identify when a child or young person may be at risk of exploitation. It also looks at how practitioners can respond to identified or suspected child exploitation in order to safeguard the child from harm.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the course participants should have:
- Be able to identify the warning signs that a child might be risk of, or experiencing exploitation
- Have an understanding of the complexities of working with children at risk of, or experiencing exploitation
- Be familiar with how to respond appropriately to safeguard a child at risk of, or experiencing exploitation
- Know how best to share intelligence and information
- Be able to apply learning to practice.

Working Together to Safeguard Children and Young People
This online multi-agency course is for any member of staff who is considered to be a lead professional for safeguarding or may be involved in multi-agency approaches to safeguarding children and young people in their organisation. This may include undertaking s47 (child abuse) enquiries, working with complex cases, or those who would regularly attend Initial Child Protection Conferences.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the course participants will have:
- Greater awareness of their own role and that of others in safeguarding children and young people and the prevention of abuse
- Develop skills in undertaking effective assessments, along with understanding their own individual responsibilities for assessing risk
- Improved knowledge of the legislation, guidance and local procedures that exist to safeguard children
- An understanding of individual roles and responsibilities within multi-agency working and the associated skills around this
- Better understanding of and development of skills to increase effective professional practice when safeguarding children

Training for Trainers
A multi-agency training day to enable organisations to deliver the LSCP Introduction to Safeguarding Children and Young People session in-house.
Participants will be trained to deliver the LSCP Introduction to Safeguarding Children and Young People training course and will also be given a copy of the resources for use in-house.
This course is aimed at Private organisations and Third Sector / not-for-profit agencies.
Participants must have completed the Introduction to Safeguarding Children and Young People either through their own agencies or the LSCP and have a good understanding of safeguarding and their organisations policies and procedures before they can attend this training.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the course participants should be able to:
- Understand the importance of safeguarding and the need for Introduction to Safeguarding Children and Young People training
- Understand how adults learn and the different learning styles
- Learn techniques of how to handle difficult training situations
- Deliver the LSCP Introduction to Safeguarding Children and Young People course in-house
- Understand the process of support from the LSCP to in-house trainers.

Delivery method
This session will be delivered in a classroom 09:30 - 16:30 and delegates will need to attend the full session in order to complete the training. Failure to attend the full day may result in a non-attendance charge and the trainers reserve the right not to issue a certificate or the ongoing training materials.

Managing Allegations Against Professionals Who Work With Children
This briefing will provide an overview of managing allegations against professionals who work with children. The session, delivered by the Local Authority Designated Officers (LADOs) will provide a guide to the referral criteria where there are concerns about professionals. They will explain the role of the LADO and the process undertaken following a referral. The session will also identify the responsibilities of agencies in identifying and responding to these concerns and allegations.
The session aims to develop knowledge and confidence in those who may need to deal with allegations about staff that they employ or manage in their organisations. This briefing is therefore particularly relevant to managers, senior leaders and those in a safeguarding lead role.
This one-hour briefing will be delivered by the Local Authority Designated Officers (LADOs).
Participants must have completed Introduction to Safeguarding Children and Young People (or their in-house equivalent) before they can access this training.

Preparing for Engaging in Child Protection Conferences (ICPC)
This session is specifically designed for practitioners who are required to attend Child Protection Conferences in Leeds. It is aimed towards all agency representatives who are new to the process, those who don’t attend regularly or last attended some time ago and anyone who has attended conferences in other Local Authorities but is new to Leeds. The aim of the session is to increase practitioners’ confidence and understanding of Child Protection Conferences using the Strengthening Families Framework.
It will help practitioners to understand the purpose of a conference, how they function within Leeds, provide an overview of the Strengthening Families Framework model, and clarify individual’s role within the conference. It will also help to build confidence and knowledge of what to expect when attending a conference in Leeds.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the session, participants will have an awareness of:
- Understanding of the purpose of a Child Protection Conferences (CPC) and when one takes place
- Understanding of the Strengthening Families Framework, and the operational model
- Understanding of your roles and responsibilities within an CPCs
- Understanding of the potential outcomes of an CPCs, including a child protection plan, and when plans may be discontinued
- Increased knowledge and confidence to support effective participation within CPCs
This two-hour briefing will be delivered by the Child Protection Conference Chairs from the Integrated Safeguarding Unit, Leeds City Council.

Illegal Money Lending
Loan sharks, also known as illegal money lenders have many personas, ranging from the friendly granny in the school playground, to the local businessman who offers financial help or that generous work colleague seeing you through until pay day. Most people who take an unlicensed loan, do not consider the person to be a loan shark and they initially view the loan as a lifeline. That is until the victim struggles to repay or questions the interest being charged, at this point that friendly helpful mask slips and a wide range of threats, control and intimidation are exposed. Loan sharks have been known to threaten and abuse borrowers, their children and wider family circle. Most victims struggle to afford basic household necessities as repayments to the loan shark are taking priority.
Anti-social behaviour, poor attendance at school and wider criminality have all been seen in situations where individuals are involved with a loan shark
This session is aimed at anyone working with families and children in the community. It will help you to understand what a loan shark is, identify the signs that someone may be involved with a loan shark and confidently signpost for support.
Learning outcomes
To increase awareness of the issue and prevalence of illegal lending.

Sudic Training
This training is aimed at all professionals involved in attending SUDIC’s and brings together Police Officers (DI/DS), medical professionals including Paediatricians, A&E, Nurses, and Yorkshire Ambulance Service (YAS).
This joint training aims to allow for removing barriers and myths, and increase understanding when dealing with these tragic, difficult cases. There may be an opportunity to open further for those attending child deaths in an investigative capacity.

Safeguarding Children & Young People Refresher Training
Practitioners should regularly update their safeguarding training. This will ensure that their knowledge, skills and practice is current and reflects changes to legislation and practice both nationally and locally within safeguarding and child protection. It is recommended that training is updated on a three-year cycle, however practitioners should check with their agency as this may differ for some.
This course provides an update of safeguarding practice, legislation and messages over the last three years. It considers these from both local and national perspectives and covers information such as definitions, raising concerns with Children’s Social Work Services, legislation and key messages from from Child Safeguarding Practice Reviews.
Delivery method
This course is accessed by watching three YouTube videos which can be requested by completing the form below. Once all three videos have been watched you will need to complete a Knowledge Check and return to us within 3 months of registration along with an Evaluation in order to receive your certificate.
