The aim of this training is to explore the impact of mental health problems on parenting capacity when responding to the developmental needs of children and young people. The training will provide an understanding of how symptoms of mental illness, and effects of medication, might impact on parenting capacity.
The training reflects a focus on the ‘Think Family’ agenda and the importance of recognising and promoting the importance of a whole-family approach, built on:
- the principles of 'reaching out’
- concentrating on individual strengths
- interventions promoting mental health and recovery
- sustaining families and promoting inclusion
The training will promote an increased understanding of the importance of effectively assessing risk to children and young people, and will emphasise the importance of multiagency collaboration, assessment and interventions to support parents and their children.
It will consider the demands on children and young people who take on the role of carer, and how this may lead to fewer opportunities to have fun, build friendships, engage and achieve in education and fulfil life chances, when there is an expectation to act as a 'grown up' and carer at home, whilst being treated like a child at school.
This training is being offered in response practitioner requests for further guidance on responding to concerns for children whose parents or carers are experiencing mental ill-health and is suitable for all practitioners working with children, young people and their families.
