Professional curiosity and information seeking

The aim of this briefing is to support practitioners to think beyond employing professional curiosity as a means of gathering information from families, and to include seeking information from other sources.

Briefing objectives

Working through this briefing will support teams to:

  • Consider more broadly the concept of professional curiosity
  • Work together to explore options for gathering information to manage risk more effectively

Team activities

  • Elect a member of the team to share details of a case they have been involved with, where there are concerns for the safety and welfare of children
  • Using this case scenario, now break into three groups, with each group thinking of three professionally curious questions that could be asked of other practitioners who may be working with this family, to build a clearer understanding of the risk to the children
  • Come back together to share and discuss your questions with the whole team

What is your one takeaway from this team exercise?

Use this team briefing as part of an ongoing programme of team development.

All team briefings are linked to a range of resources which are focused on supporting practitioners to deliver positive outcomes for children.
